The territory of Sliven Municipality is 1366 square km and embraces 49 settlements – the towns of Sliven and Kermen and 47 villages.

Sliven is situated on the outskirts of the Southern slopes and hilly spurs of the Sliven Mountain (1181 m), where the Eastern part of the Balkan range starts. On the South and the East the town is opened toward the Sliven plain.
Its altitude varies from 180 m up to 300 m.
Sliven Municipality is situated on the sub-Balkan plain in the zone of transitional-continental climate. In the region of Sliven, winter is mild and summer is relatively warm. The local wind “Bora” is typical for the region.
Sliven Municipality is situated in an ecologically pure environment:
- Preserved ecosystem and biological equilibrium
- No pollution of the water and the soils with heavy metals
- No air pollution above the permissible EC norms
The River Tundja is the main water source in the Municipality, with a water basin of about 7 880 square km. The dam “Jrebchevo” is constructed on the river Tundja, 25 km away from Sliven, with capacity of over 400 million cubic meters and mainly used for irrigation.
Sliven is crossed by the rivers “Asenovska”, “Selishtka” and “Novoselska”. On the river valley of “Asenovska” is constructed the “Asenovec” dam which is the main water source in town.
There is an abundance of thermal springs in the region of Sliven Municipality. The water is particularly valuable in the treatment of gastro-intestinal and hepato-biliary disorders, diseases of the skeletal and muscular system and the peripheral nervous system.
